The Juggling Act

My random thoughts on juggling homeschooling, working, parenting, playing music, trying to keep the house from being a complete health hazard, and staying healthy and sane.

Trip to the Columbia Gorge

We spent a beautiful couple of days with Aunt Teen and Uncle Carl this weekend in the Columbia Gorge. We hiked around their place on Saturday and then had a nice dinner at their house. After dinner we played a board game and then the kids watched Andy Griffith episodes while the grownups got to hang out and visit. On Sunday we took a short hike near the mouth of the Klikitat River. Apparently you can sometimes see bald eagles during the salmon runs (which are now), but we didn't see any on Sunday. The spot was just beautiful and well worth the trip there even without any bald eagles. The only thing that slowed us down were the burrs.

Kids Books We're Reading (and recommend!)

  • The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick (Entertaining Civil War era adventure story, includes battle of Gettysburg)
  • Killdee House by Rutherford Montgomery (Sweet story for kids who love animals, though one animal dies near the beginning)
  • The Cay by Theodore Taylor (A classic for good reason, with a bit of interesting geography and WW II history)
  • Questors by Joan Lennon (Good story, mostly sci-fi, but with dragons)
  • Sophia Scrooby Preserved by Martha Bacon (A great story, one of my favorites as a kid)

DVD Schooling (DVDs we've enjoyed that have some educational value)

  • Elegant Universe
  • Einstein's Big Idea
  • Desparate Crossing: The Untold Story of the Mayflower (Really engaging 3-hour show, interspersing documentary with acted vignettes)
  • Elizabeth I the Virgin Queen (One of the less gory versions of Elizabeth's story)
  • Rivers and Tides (about Andy Goldsworthy)
  • The Presidents the Lives and Legacies of the 43 Leaders of the United States (I don't agree with everything, but good snapshot of each president)
  • The Story of One (A very entertaining history of numbers)

  • Ghost Riders by Sharyn McCrumb (Historical fiction, Civil War in the Appalachian mountains)
  • The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani (Historical fiction, 17th century Persia--great storytelling)
  • Teach Me by R.A. Nelson (Fiction, a cautionary tale)
